Bonfire Night
At The Halfmoon (5/11/04)
Well... what can one say!? The pub was absolutely PACKED OUT - I don't think anyone could've expected the numbers that turned out for the Half Moon Bonfire Night Event. The firework display started a little early, apparently due to the lack of take up on the 'Best Guy' competition which was supposed to take part early on in the night's format. Anyway, I reckon if you were just going to turn up in the car park then clear off straight after the fireworks, it's your own fault if you missed them! The display was quite impressive - there was a huge bonfire and some loud and spectacular aerial fireworks that went on for about an hour. During the display hot dogs, burgers and jacket potatoes were on sale from the 'barbeque tent' which had been erected behind the pub. There was an extension to midnight, and a lot of people stayed to the end - well done to Chris & Sam for organising the night - I just wish I'd remembered my camera... maybe next year

Half Moon Grand Reopening! (27/10/04)

Hang on... did it actually close!? Whatever - In any case, is was an excellent night and I haven't seen the pub as busy for a long, long time. I hope it's a sign of things to come because I think the pub IS the heart of the village and the community spirit has been sadly lacking for years. But let's remember it's not all down to Chris & Sam and if they are prepared to put this kind of effort in to get the Half Moon back on track, we should give them our support! Let's not take it for granted - we have a real opportunity here to help these people put some soul back into the village!

Site Update (23/10/04)

Well, it's almost a year since I did anything major with the site as I have had a number of other projects on the go which have taken up much of my free time. However, I am committed to the continued development of the site due the huge amount of positive response it has received since its release a little over18 months ago, and as such I have revamped the layout style and updated quite a lot of the content.

Site Update (24/11/03)

OK, the site has had a few tweaks here and there including an updated home page which contains links to Skidby related news items found on the Hull Daily Mail's website. A new page detailing a new registered childminding service in the village, and a new search engine have been included as well as an update to the Skidby Dairy Products page. The Swanland Automatic Weather Station still has a few technical problems, but we are getting updates about once an hour.

Weather Station Offline (14/10/03)
The various weather elements found on the site are temporarily unavailable due to some technical problems with the Swanland Automatic Weather Station. Normal service will resume shortly as and when the SAWS is back online. Until then you will probably see some place holders where the graphical elements of the local conditions were previously displayed. My apologies for any inconvenience you may experience. [Webmaster[

Local Reports

Road Works! Grrr! (18/02/03)
Well...they've started digging the road up as promised, but it appears that there is little other work going on, just digging the road up! So we have temporary traffic lights  for a week (month?) or two. Just a word of warning though - because of the positioning of the lights, I have seen people unfamiliar with the road(works) start to overtake a van obscuring the lights, thinking that it was parked...so take care people!

Skidby Mill - Wartime Display (13/09/03)
The village will be turning the clock back more than half a century when its landmark windmill stages a Second World War exhibition.
Youngsters are being given the opportunity to experience wartime life. This event will see an authentic thresher and team of horses working the land. and there will be people in period costume, including servicemen and Home Guard volunteers. Volunteers will be ploughing, harrowing and planting - all jobs vital to the war effort. They will also be digging in the miller's garden and composting apples. The mill will be producing National Flour. The aim of the day is to show the importance of mills and the countryside during the conflict.

Jane Bielby, museums outreach officer, said: "We hope to recreate many of the familiar aspects of wartime Britain, including Prisoners of War,
Land Army girls and Home Guard, and show people the importance of life in the countryside during the war. "We hope it is a fun and memorable day." Anyone interested in seeing how mills worked during the Second World War can visit Skidby windmill on the day from 10am to 5pm.
Admission is £1.50 for adults, 50p for children or free for children aged under five. There is parking available at a cost of £1.
